Tita Hutchison Releases “Hello Love”

Tita Hutchison Releases “Hello Love”

I was fortunate to work with one of my dearest friends, Tita Hutchison, on her debut EP “Hello Love”. Throughout the years we’ve worked on many different projects and shared the stage many, many times but this project is the most special to me and I was extremely honored when she asked me to mix “Hello Love”. What I didn’t know then was that it would be so much more than just mixing….

I got to spend about a week and a half mixing, arranging, recording, and re-recording with another one of my best friends Tim Pedersen. We had a blast and did a LOT of experimenting. On two songs we tracked drums using a gorgeous ’67 Rogers drum kit with a 20″ kick, 12″ rack tom, 14″ floor tom, and a 14″ Yamaha Anton Fig snare. Tim let me experiment with some very unconventional micing techniques too. The goal was to capture a sound that fit the emotion of the song with tons of vibe.

Here’s one of the unique setups:

Tim Pedersen recording drums on Tita Hutchison's "Hello Love" at Ultimate Studios, Inc

On the kick we used an SM57. There was no hole in the kick and the 57 gave us a nice punch. We used a pillow against the outside head to make the note nice and short. An Audio-Technica AT4080 ribbon mic as a mono overhead placed above the floor tom, a Shure S55 placed between the rack tom and hi-hat, facing the snare and angled slightly down, and an MXL Cube for a mono room mic. All I can say is WOW! What a cool sound. Tim didn’t use any crashes. He used two rides instead; a Paiste Formula 602 and a Paiste Dark Energy Mark I along with 15″ Paiste Formula 602 hi-hats.

We re-tracked Tita’s vocals on one song too. She is such a fantastic singer and super easy to work with in the studio. We used an Audio-Technica 4060 tube mic going into an Overstayer VCA compressor and GAP Pre73 DLX mic pre. It sounded simply amazing. Of course when you have a great singer recording is easy! 🙂

Tim and I took quite a few chances during the mixing process too. I prefer mixing mostly analog so we had a pretty old school process. We used our hands for automation, we panned things in ways that modern music wouldn’t allow, and we treated mixes likes takes. Doing multiple passes until we got a good one. The entire process was very musically satisfying. I’m very proud of our work and I hope you all enjoy it too.

Tita Hutchison Recording

Tita put a fantastic cast of characters together for “Hello Love”. Michael Thompson on Guitar, Leland Sklar on Bass, Tim Pedersen on Drums (and producing!), Christian Klokovits on Piano, Lao Tizer on Piano, Justin Apergis on Bass, Travis Newlon on Guitar, Tim Mcintyre on Drums, Sahara Thompson on additional backing vocals, Zach Thompson on percussion

I would like to say thank you to Tita and Tim for the opportunity to work with them on Hello Love. I’m really proud of this EP!

Statues of Cats EP Released!

Statues of Cats EP Released!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rock Band Statues of Cats Release Debut EP!

Los Angeles, California – October 8, 2013 – Rock band Statues of Cats have just released their debut EP, “Memorabilia”, on 80/20 Records. The band recorded and mixed the EP at Ultimate Rhythm Studios in Los Angeles with engineer Charlie Waymire. The mastering was done by Ernesto Homeyer at Ultimate Rhythm Studios. With a vibe similar to Kings of Leon and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Statues of Cats give you a mix of rock, funk, good grooves, and fantastic vocals! “Memorabilia” is sure to earn its place in just about anyone’s collection.

Statues of Cats recording their debut EP!

Statues of Cats consists of David Hauge (vocals/guitars), Jonney Machtig (guitars/vocals), Dan Rojas (bass/vocals), and Anthony Salazar (drums/vocals). The approach for this 5 song EP was much different than the typical recording process in this day and age. Where as a lot of music made now is piece mailed together, SOC and engineer Charlie Waymire wanted “Memorabilia” to be done organically with as much “feel” as possible. “We had everyone in the room playing together, live. We even kept the scratch vocal on one of the songs because David sang his heart out on that take. What you hear on this EP is 4 guys having fun and playing music together. The energy is contagious” says engineer Charlie Waymire.

Statues of Cats is not your run of the mill rock band. They aren’t afraid to play a heavy rock riff on one song and then follow it up with a funk tune. The band was featured on an episode of FullOnDrums.com during tracking and gave a live performance of “Valley of the Sun”. They are currently working on tour dates for the fall.

“Memorabilia” is available on iTunes!

The Sonic Chameleon Records New EP! w/video

The Sonic Chameleon Records New EP! w/video

Sandesh Nagaraj, known as The Sonic Chameleon, has been working on a brand new EP due out this fall. His writing is anything but predictable and he has enlisted some amazing musicians to add to his already deep musical landscape.

“I love working with Sandesh because I never know what to expect. There are no rules, no restrictions to his writing and he lets me have that approach during tracking as well. We did some experimenting and really created a unique vibe for these songs. He always has great musicians playing with him and I’m honored to be a part of it.” says engineer Charlie Waymire.

The first single off the EP is called “Gini” and we were lucky to get a live performance from Sandesh and the fantastic Katie Campbell on vocals. Enjoy!

Statues of Cats Tracking Debut EP!

Statues of Cats Tracking Debut EP!

Los Angeles based rock band Statues of Cats have been burning the midnight oil working on their debut EP, “Memorabilia”, to be released on 80/20 Records September 26th.

The band consists of David Hauge (vocals/guitar/trumpet & other noises), Jonney Machtig (guitars & crazy sounds), Anthony Salazar (drums & percussion), and Dan Rojas (bass) and their sound is a modern-vintage rock explosion of fiery jams, funky-jazzy skank, and 8-bit, punk-rock sandpaper grittiness. If you think that description sounds over the top then you haven’t heard this band yet.

It has been a real pleasure working with these guys. They are young and have lots of energy but they also have an amazing amount of musical maturity. Well beyond their years. We were also able to get everyone in the room at the same time playing and capture them as a band with all the energy their live shows have. I think you’ll hear that when the EP comes out.

The band needs your help to finish the EP! Give the band some support. We promise you won’t be disappointed!
