Microphone Monday EP2 – Heil PR30

Microphone Monday EP2 – Heil PR30

For episode 2 of the new Microphone Monday series I decided to make 180? turn and pick one of my favorite dynamic mics. The Heil PR30.

Recording Piano Los AngelesIf you have followed my videos you already know that I love the PR30. It’s quite possibly my favorite tom mic ever and also gets used on guitar cabinets a lot. The nice round low mid, tight low end and forward mid-range make it easy to work with in a mix.

Plus it has fantastic off-axis rejection. That comes in real handy when you are miking a tom and there are cymbals in close proximity.

Besides toms and guitar cabs I’ve had great luck with the Heil PR30 on overheads (especially in a live situation), hi-hat and bass cab. Wait till you hear the bass in this video! It’s tight and punchy.

Another place I’ve had great luck with the PR30 is vocals. The smooth but pronounced mid-range make it a no brainier on a vocal. Heil Sound also make a handheld version called the PR35.

Without further ado let’s get to Microphone Monday EP2!

Happy recording!

New!! Microphone Monday EP1: AT4047

recording bass with 1 microphone
Audio-Technica AT4047 recording bass

I’m really excited about this new series on the Ultimate Studios, Inc YouTube channel. It’s called “Microphone Monday”. Ernesto and I will record a short little ditty using only 1 microphone at a time. We tracked drums (using only 2 mics!), bass, guitar and piano.

Every Monday for the next 6 weeks we’ll feature a different mic from the mic locker at Ultimate Studios.

This is something I’ve wanted to do for quite sometime now and we are finally doing it.

Why have I wanted to do this?

recording electric guitar with 1 microphone
Audio-Technica AT4047 recording guitar

First off I love the challenge of recording something with only a few tools. It puts more emphasis on the player and makes the engineer focus on the best mic placement possible.

Second, I was really interested in hearing how each mic would contribute to the overall sound when being used on ALL of the instruments.

And thirdly, to hear each mic on every instrument at the same time was also a great reset for the ears. Like many engineers working on a daily basis we tend to fall into patterns that we know work. Using one mic on all of these sound sources and then another and another was a great way to really hear the difference in how they capture a source.

This really helps in knowing what tools to use for a particular color or vibe. After all microphones are basically paintbrushes for an engineer.

The approach

recording piano at ultimate studios inc los angeles with 2 microphone

We setup each mic in pretty much the same position for each take. There are a few differences but the setups are very similar. There are multiple ways we could have approached each mic but we felt it was best to setup them up as close as possible. It seems to have worked well and makes it possible to get an idea of how each mic works.

To kick off the new series I chose the Audio-Technica AT4047. It’s a fantastic microphone and one of my favorites. Check out the video below and please subscribe to the YouTube channel!

Happy Recording,
Charlie

Batfarm Releases New Single “Now That You’re Gone”

Batfarm Releases New Single “Now That You’re Gone”

“Now That You’re Gone” A powerful, emotive, new single from Batfarm

While we have been super busy finishing up the new Batfarm EP the dynamic duo of Alexx Calise and Dennis Morehouse have released the second single from the upcoming EP.

Alexx Calise and Dennis Morehouse of Batfarm

“Now That You’re Gone” is an emotive ballad about being left in the wake of a loved one’s suicide. As a sufferer of depression myself, I was trying (lyrically) to bring to light the often uncomfortable subject of suicide and self harm, and the consequences that many loved ones are forced to suffer when someone needlessly takes their own life.” says Alexx Calise.

Written almost 10 years ago by Dennis and Alexx it has taken a while for them to get the song exactly where they wanted it to be. Including production that was equally as powerful as the song content.

Recording sessions for the new EP will wrap in the coming weeks with mixing starting almost immediately after there completion. Look for the EP release this summer and in the meantime check out the new single “Now That You’re Gone”.

Batfarm Releases First Single “Get Out”

Batfarm Releases First Single “Get Out”

Los Angeles Rock band Batfarm releases first single “Get Out” and it’s BatAss!

Alexx Calise and Dennis Morehouse of Los Angeles rock band Batfarm

Ok I’ll admit that I’m a little biased since I’ve actually been making the new EP with the band. But seriously they rock and the new Batfarm single is BatAss! Alexx Calise is a powerhouse behind a mic. I don’t know another way to put it. She has so much soul and is a harmony factory. Not to mention she rocks on guitar too.

On drums is Dr. Dennis Morehouse (ok so I gave him the Dr. title but it’s well deserved). He’s an engineers dream because he makes recording drums not only fun but very easy. He’s rock solid and has a killer tone all by himself. I did my best to just not mess it up.

I met Alexx and Dennis a couple years ago when Dan Hegarty and I were doing our Music Chamber podcast and live concerts. They played one of our Toys for Tots benefits and I knew right then I wanted to work with them. I only had to wait a couple years (no big deal…) and I can say the wait was worth it. It’s been such a rewarding experience working with them in the studio.

Enough of me blabbering. Have a listen for yourself and please check them out on social media and give them your support. You can find them pretty much everywhere:

BATFARM RELEASE NEW “GET OUT” SINGLE

Los Angeles, CA (March 26, 2019) – LA-based indie rock duo, Batfarm have just released their new single, “Get Out.” The punchy yet introspective tune about battling one’s inner demons is the first original single for the band (they released a cover of the Sneaker Pimp’s “6 Underground” late last year), and an official music video will be following in the coming weeks. The song is now available via all major media outlets, including iTunes and Amazon, and an accompanying lyric video is available on Youtube.

Comprised of Alexx Calise, an introspective lyricist and “harmony machine”, and Dennis Morehouse, a masterful arranger and sound manipulator, Batfarm is a two-piece alternative rock band whose sound can be best described as “darkedelic”. The multi-instrumentalists keep it small not only for efficiency’s sake, but also to keep creating the music they want without added personalities. The band will be releasing a 5-song EP later this year.

EGH Release 3rd Studio Album “High Octane”

EGH Release 3rd Studio Album “High Octane”

Instrumental Rock Band EGH Release New Studio Album “High Octane”

Instrumental Rock Band EGH records new album at Ultimate Studios, Inc Los Angeles

It’s been almost 7 years since the instrumental rock duo called EGH released it’s last album. Comprised of drummer Charlie Waymire and and guitarist Ernesto Homeyer, “High Octane” marks the bands 3rd official release.

High Octane is a departure from EGH’s first two albums. The songs on High Ocatne are tight, guitar riff driven tracks with thunderous drums, catchy melodies and rippin’ solos.

Ernesto Homeyer doesn’t waste any time dropping killer guitar riffs in your ears and then…..well then come the raging solos! Drummer Charlie Waymire holds down the fort with driving, aggressive grooves.

This is for any fan of hard rock instrumental music. Or anyone needing to speed on their way to work (it happens to all of us some times!), High Ocatne has the riffs of Ozzy and Iron Maiden with solos of Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen.

Buckle up! High Octane is better at getting you moving than your morning pot of java!

Mixed by Charlie Waymire & Ernesto Homeyer

Mastered by Ernesto Homeyer

“On this album we wanted to do something more energetic with much simpler arrangements. It was more about having a lot of fun writing songs that get you pumped up instead of something you need a math degree to listen to. All of these tracks are much shorter and get to the point fast! We were just having a ton of fun writing and recording these songs.” says drummer/engineer Charlie Waymire

You can find “High Octane” at iTunes, Apple Music, Tidal, CD Baby, Bandcamp, and more….

Artist Spotlight: Our Dying World Releases Debut EP “Expedition”

Artist Spotlight: Our Dying World Releases Debut EP “Expedition”

Los Angeles Thrash Metal band Our Dying World release their debut EP “Expedition”

Los Angeles Thrash Metal band Our Dying World

The last 9 months working with Thrash Metal band Our Dying World on their release EP has been a wonderful journey that has had about every twist and turn you could imagine while making a record. Some were typical to the actual recording process and some were a part of the personal journey that one finds themself in when baring their soul to the world.

I believe this is something each and every artists goes through when creating and ultimately releasing their music to the world. Yet no matter how hard the struggle seems to be music has a magical way of pulling one through the worst of times. The making of “Expedition” was basically 3 acts that became one in the end.

It started with excitement and hope as Tom began recording the first songs. The middle of the process was more of a roller coaster paralleled with self-doubt and uncertainty but in the final act it all came together. Tom got to see his vision come to life for the first time and he was joined by the perfect band members for the project.

For my end of things I had the pleasure of working with some great people and helping produce one amazing Thrash Metal EP (of course I may be a bit biased). Curious for Tom’s take on what the past months have meant for him I sent him a few questions to answer.

Enjoy a short interview with Tom Tierney and please be sure to check out Our Dying World’s debut EP “Expedition”.

Interview with Our Dying World’s Tom Tierney

What was the catalyst for starting our dying world?
Los Angeles Thrash Metal band recording guitars at Ultimate Studios, IncI remember exactly what it was. I had made a really severe choice that severed ties between me and my previous studio and band. I think to a certain degree it was blown up to include people that had no business being involved, but I had to own one of the biggest mistakes in my life.

Music was really all I knew and at this point the only way to get past it was to write. Dirk Verbeuren, who’s been coaching me in drums and life said to me, “Your success doesn’t lie within the confines of those walls. You can make the decision to keep moving.”

Shortly after making the decision to start writing and playing a show with a band I had done some touring with, I was fired for “not bringing in enough press”. Probably one of the most infuriating things I’ve ever heard in my life but they have a track record for going through drummers like congress goes through legislation.

I decided I was done waiting on the world to give me a chance and I was giving it one more full blown shot before I hung up my guitar forever. And I think I had to be in that mindset of “Do or Die” before I could truly access what I needed to make the record come together how it did.

What has writing, recording, and releasing Expedition mean for me on a personal and professional level?

recording drums with Our Dying World at Ultimate Studios, inc los angelesGrowing up, I always thought I was meant for the stage in one way or another. As I got older and reality set in as it tends to do in later years, I began to doubt whether or not I was actually cut out for it.

I had never run a band or made business decisions, I’d never even written a song. I just kind of learned the parts from other people’s music and played my parts.

After multiple upsets with previous projects and band members who’s egos, insecurities, and inability to share power with the other band members caused me to basically flounder in limbo with music for about six years, I decided to give it one last try to put in everything I had, and if it didn’t work out, then at least I’d know I was the problem and I should try something different with my life.

I haven’t been on a recording since 2011 so having a new recording where I was not only playing drums, but writing all the music and playing most of the instruments with exceptions to singing and playing solos, showed me a few things:

1) When I had the right mindset, resources, drive, and unwillingness to put up with anyone’s bullshit, I can actually write half a decent song that people ENJOY

2) I found a creative and successful way to channel my negativity into something that truly can be captured on a track and it shows

3) I am perfectly capable of making decisions as a leader and a part of a team. I’m also willing to listen and make compromises when my opinion may not be the popular one.

4) I don’t have to settle. I turned down a few people for the lineup because the vibe wasn’t right. And I always knew almost instantly, or they would back out on their own. I knew we could be a unit when we all spent a day just hanging out together and chilling without the distractions of the setlist and the noise.

recording guitar with thrash metal band Our Dying World at Ultimate Studios, Inc van nuys5) And personally, I finally was able to complete a huge goal that I set out on an Expedition to find. I’m not sure if I found myself, a new family, or a little bit of both. But I know for a damn fact that if I hadn’t picked up that guitar and just went for it that I wouldn’t be sitting here listening to Liberation with a smile on my face.

Expedition was entering the race. I think I’m qualified to run it, as is everyone on the team, whether you’re recording, playing, marketing, or whatever your role is. The point is we’re finally getting started. It’s been the longest wait of my life and I’m glad I made it to the starting line. Now the race begins.

What was your process for writing and recording Expedition?

I’ll be quite honest with you, the process was really rough. There was a ton of alcohol involved, mostly depressing nights of just kind of wallowing in anger and resentment. But the material and lyrics felt real and they felt like they would hit hard.

2018 overall was a really shitty year and I chose to put my faith in the wrong people most of the time, and I would wind up getting hurt for not keeping my cards close enough to the chest. But every time, I’d grab a new riff, a new verse of lyrics, and it was almost a paradox of feeling so connected to what I was writing and creating, it was almost like I would subconsciously put myself into blackouts or some emotional shit so I could keep the train of thought going.

Expedition is in no way a happy or very well thought out record. It’s got some of my lowest points in it and without divulging too much information, it’s been a savior to be able to outlet all of this into tangible music. Not sure what would have happened if I didn’t deal with this process the way I did.

At times I know it was a struggle getting through the writing and recording process. What was the main thing that kept you going?

It’s really hard to say. I think it was a lot of hatred to be completely transparent. I wanted to show the world that I may be totally fucked in the head, but I can make gold out of it and you’re gonna fucking hear it whether you like it or not.

And then you’re gonna find yourself enjoying it. There was definitely a few times I was just thinking about scrapping it. Doing all this by myself was a new experience and I had literally no idea what I was doing.

But there was always progress. That was how I think I knew I was onto something. From picking the right members, to tracking songs, to writing lyrics, there was always something new I could show them. I think that if there had been too many hang ups or too many setbacks I would have become discouraged and tossed in the towel.

But we were always moving. No matter what. Even in the setbacks, it seems to have taken a different course than my personal life. Things moved smoothly, almost like clockwork. I was definitely skeptical at first but in the end that smoothness is what told me that it was the right thing to do.

How would you describe ODW?

Tom Tierney, Dave Ainsworth of Thrash Metal band Our Dying World with producer Charlie Waymire at Ultimate Studios, IncOh man this is gonna be a tough one. ODW is a concept that I took from the pit of my heart and found a way to friendship, a new love for my own talents and of course everyone else in the band, and a sense of fulfillment that I didn’t know if I would ever find.

We’re derived of a bunch of nerds, teachers, jokers, and we have a cowboy for a vocalist. What can I say? I’m not entirely sure how such a blissful thing came from such a dark place. But I know for a fact that I looked at everyone just hanging out and drinking their beers and eating chips on a boat the other day and thinking “I hope this lineup never changes”.

I know there’s gonna be issues and setbacks and whatnot, but it feels legit this time. And I hope I see these same dudes after the show every god damn time we play. Cuz it feels real now and there’s momentum. And it’s enlightening and terrifying. But with that fear, that’s how you know it really means a lot, ya know?

What’s in the near future for the band?

So we’ve got a show on April 28 at Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood and then in June we’re flying across the country to play NJ Metalfest, which is gonna be absolutely legendary.

Between all that, I think we wanna shoot a video and we’ve already started writing again. I think we’re shooting for a new single before the summer is over. The process never stops. Other than that, man we just want to see how far out into the world this record goes. We’ve really been excited about the press we’ve received from random internet magazines and radio stations.

I think at this point we just have to keep putting our all into it. Especially now that the writing process is open to everyone. I’ll still have my hand in the pot but I’ve got a full band that I’m standing with now and I know everything that comes to the light will be far better than anything I could do myself.

Drum Room Miking – Using The Wall!

Drum Room Miking – Using The Wall!

Using a wall for Drum Room Miking

I LOVE experimenting with drum room miking. I also love finding techniques that can work in any room, provide some extra vibe and give me extra options during mix down. That to me is a win win!

In our last window we used an amp to create a vibey room sound but in this video we’ll use a wall!

One technique (or trick if you will) that I have used for a long, long time is miking the wall. Yes, miking the wall!

how to get a drum room sound - recording studio los angeles

My mic of choice for this is the ubiquitous SM57 and by placing the mic as close to the wall as possible, so a business card can barely fit between the wall and the mic, the 57 is turned into a boundary mic. The 57 is already filtered on the top and bottom by nature and the wall tends to add to that.

I like this because that can help soften the cymbals a little as well as smearing the transient in a really cool way. This is what allowed me to get a “room sound” in my old studio that was pretty small and didn’t actually sound great. Add a little compression and you can get some real excitement out of this one microphone!

Now every room is different. As always I highly recommend experimenting in your room to find the best placement. And don’t forget the floor is a wall too!

Check out the video below and let me know how this works for you!

Happy recording!
Charlie

Recording the Band – Paracosmic

Recording the Band – Paracosmic

Paracosmic, Recording the band…live!

One of my favorite parts of the music making process is when a band wants to record all together at the same time. Live off the floor. Not only is the energy from the band great but it’s also a challenge from the recording aspect.

Especially when their are 6 band member including drums, bass, 2 guitar players, saxaphone, harmonica, keys, sitar, tabla…and a second bass? Yep!

That is Paracosmic. They are funk, they are rock, they are blues, they are psychedelic and they are heavy on improv. That last part is why recording live is so important for a band like Paracosmic. They feed off each other every second of every song and it’s a lot of fun.

So how did we go about recording this band live here at Ultimate Studios, Inc? Very carefully!

Tracking sheet for Paracosmic live band recording at Ultimate Studios, Inc Los Angeles

We had Brandon Cooke (drums) setup in the live room with 16 mics. To open up some space in the room we decided to record the drums in the corner. Not only do the drums sound great there but it opens up room for the other musicians in the room.

Joining Brandon in the live room was Ashton Slater (guitar), Travis Soto (guitar/bass2) and Leo ‘Toad’ Meginley (bass).

For Toad we had a DI as well as a Mark Bass rig setup in the back room. That allowed Toad to have his tone in his ears as well as options for mixing. Both guitar amps were setup in the ISO booth separated by to 4” thick panels. The ISO is very dead and works well with multiple amps.

So far it’s pretty straight forward but it’s about to get interesting!

In the Control Room

recording sitar with paracosmic at Ultimate Studios, Inc Van Nuys

With need for isolation for the keys, sax and flute Evan Hatfield (sax/keys/sitar) and Adrian Johnson (harmonica/flute) joined me in the control where we tracked them live with the rest of the band. To help get a little extra isolation between the sax and flute we setup a clear sonic shield between them. It worked really well too!

On one of the songs we tracked live sitar and table in the control room too. It was crowded for sure but it allowed the band to play together like they were used to. It sounded great!
